Asbestos is found in many places that might remain unseen. Many people do not know what asbestos is or the effects it can have on our bodies. Asbestos is a dangerous type of mineral that is found in rocks. There are six different types:

  • Chrysotile
  • Actinolite
  • Amosite
  • Anthophyllite
  • Crocidolite
  • Tremolite

What is Asbestos?

People used to mine for asbestos because of its supposed benefits. Its primary uses were for:

  • Insulation
  • Cement
  • Flooring
  • Roofing
  • Fireproof products

The last asbestos mine was closed during the late 1900s. Eventually, because of the negative health effects that were discovered, use of asbestos was outlawed for these purposes. Exposure to asbestos can cause lung cancer and other severe illnesses. Not only that, but it just hurts to breath in. Because of the mineral/rock texture it has, breathing it in can feel like it is scraping against you nose and throat. Thankfully, it is no longer used and there are safer materials to use instead. Something that many people do not realize is that, in many older buildings, asbestos is still present.
