Asbestos is a hazardous material that was once widely used in the construction of homes and buildings. Although the production of most asbestos-containing materials has been phased out in the U.S., it may still be present in older structures. Asbestos abatement is necessary to prevent the chronic lung diseases caused by asbestos exposure. Asbestos abatement involves removal, repair, or encapsulation of asbestos-containing materials.

The Proper Steps of Asbestos Abatement

The following steps are included in professional asbestos abatement.

  • Demarcation: Once careful planning is complete, contractors will clearly mark the area that has been identified as hazardous.
  • Regulated Work Area: A regulated work area is essential in the asbestos abatement process. The work space will be sectioned off by thick plastic, air ducts will be sealed, and HVAC systems will be shut off prior to removal or repair.
  • Thorough Removal: Contractors will wear respirators and protective clothing while removing all asbestos-containing materials. The materials will be disposed of in bags which will be sealed and removed through a decontamination unit with a protective lining. HEPA filtered vacuums will be used to contain fibers during the removal process.
  • Final Cleanup: After the abatement is complete, the work area will be cleaned with HEPA vacuuming and other methods. Barriers and air filtration devices will only be removed from the designated area once clearance testing is complete. The work area must meet specific clearance criteria as laid out in the planning process.
